In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed cost of audi key replacement the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement key audi. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at a Bosch model, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part across the audi key 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
