Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

bedside crib travel cot cots, also referred to as co-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months of age when your baby is required to move into a cot or moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was impressed by the fact that this model features an integrated bassinet that can be used all around the home. It also comes with a manual rocking feature. It was simple to put together, and even came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used by children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes available that are large and standard both of which convert into a toddler bed or cot bed. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's an excellent option to select the larger one.

Jasmine, an MFM mum who tested the product at home, liked that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too big for the room of her baby. She says it's easy to lift her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and that the quality is great when compared to other cots she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is - it's a lift-off bassinet that can be moved around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has a reflux incline option and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you don't have to purchase a brand new mattress when your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside, choose one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It must also be lower away from the way, so you can raise your baby towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the base of your cot to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, other mums prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. One of our mum testers said that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It has an easy-to-fold side that you can push at the touch the button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside cots sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is because of the risk of inhaling suffocation. You should also be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot, they must take the sides off once they are ready to do so. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of bedside cot mattress cribs, from basic to extravagant. The more luxurious options may include features like an integrated night light and a calming centre that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby to sleep, or even an adjustable base that allows you to reach your baby for feedings. You can also find models that can be transformed into an infant bed or a toddler bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is perfect for new mothers recovering from Caesarean births or those who have to remain in bed for extended periods. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, stating that it was simple to use and made her baby much easier particularly after her c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and comes with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's a bit larger than other cribs that we've tried, but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It has a great design that is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was fantastic because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier for moms who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot (browse this site)'s main safety feature is that it can be easily adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or his or her nappies. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from an C-section. It is recommended to choose a design which allows you to lower the sides of the bed with a simple button press. The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the product is not being used as the bassinet.
