1. iRobot s8

It's not often tripped or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects such as power cables. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

Eufy is owned by Anker, has become an established brand in the world of budget robot vacuums. However, it didn't offer the option of a model that could mop. This is changing with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive set of modern features and is able to compete against much more expensive models.

The laser navigation system is the primary selling point of this machine. Previous Eufy devices have built up a rough map of your home utilizing infrared sensors and bumping into objects but the X8's laser mapping technology is far more precise. It also takes a lot less time to construct an accurate picture of your space and stores multiple maps, which is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It is able to easily throw debris under the side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin. Its tyres are adept at hugging edges and corners, even though they're circular. It's not the best cat litter picker, though as our tests show it can only remove about 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

There's a basic mopping option that uses the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is a good option for spills that aren't too big however, you aren't able to limit the amount of water it is using which can limit its effectiveness for more severe staining. It does, however, do an excellent job of removing pet hair, with a higher speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

The company is known for its quiet home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, gorgeous design and excellent navigation. It has a few oddities in its operation that keep it from being considered the best smart robot vacuum.

The sensors of the RX2 work well in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. As with many others it's not a very good climber and is prone to problems with things like metal threshold transition strips.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac that looks like any other, but comes with some extra features and is more efficient. Its smart mapping system creates 2D and 3D maps of your home and uses those to navigate and avoid obstacles. It's even able to spot common obstacles like power cords and furniture legs in real time. This combination of sensors with a bump detector, and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum from stepping on steps makes it one our most agile vacuums.

In our tests, it was able to moved over large shag rugs and didn't get stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation abilities were also impressive as its score for composite tests on carpet and bare floors was better than the competition. It picked up 98.5 percent of the surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of the competition; there's a round cleaning button on the top. You can launch it via the app or via voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, designate no-go zones and check its cleaning history. Clad in smart dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and is attractive in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easily accessible for emptying, and removing the filters is also easy.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a simple, no-frills robot vacuum sale vacuum at a reasonable cost, the Eufy11S could be a good choice. The manufacturer says that you can avoid this by keeping these items off the floor and by using a cord organizer if possible. It also suggests cleaning the dustbin on a regular basis, replacing the filters and changing or washing the brushes as required.

6. iRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba is the flagship model of iRobot's robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's the best robot floor cleaner robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation and environmental mapping are a joy to behold. It also has more advanced automation features than its competitors, such as the ability to create virtual boundary markers through its mobile application. It's a capable robot vacuum, even though its app isn't the most responsive and the 980's wheels spin out when it is pushed over cables.

We love the 980, because it makes use of its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM), to memorise your home's floor plan. It will use this information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path through each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a cleaner vacuum than the majority of high-end robot vacuums.

Although the 980's battery lifespan and bin size aren't quite as good as those of other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
