Newer protocols include the full duplex RS422 and the half duplex RS485 protocols, each of which drives differential 0 to 5 volt signals on the serial cable. The RS232 signals are represented by voltage levels with respect to a system common (power / logic ground). Chassis and signal grounds are connected together to the digital ground (DGND) signal. Chassis and signal grounds are connected together to the digital ground (GND) signal. The twin consists of two conductors that are twisted together. In order to increase the extent of the Modbus network, repeaters can be used; and signal amplifying and regenerating devices provided with two communication ports that transfer to each what they receive from the other. Consult the data sheets for any peripheral devices that you are interfacing to the SPI and, if a different configuration is needed, follow the instructions below to set up the appropriate SPI data transfer protocol. A data transfer is initiated by a master device when it stores a message byte into its SPDR register. The /SS (active-low slave select) is typically used to enable data transfers by slave devices when it is active low.

The "idle" state (MARK) has the signal level negative with respect to common, and the "active" state (SPACE) has the signal level positive with respect to common. For an off, mark or logic 1 state, the driver's A terminal is negative relative to the B terminal. If on the other hand each terminal can accept only a single cable, a proper branch must be created using three auxiliary terminals for each instrument to be connected. The device ships with an Ethernet RS-485 communication interface as well as a RS-485 to USB cable, which is said to be able to communicate with a PC using proprietary Windows based software (and driver, I think). But I notice that he describes using a (different) RS-485 to USB converter and splicing from the Ethernet cable to the converter, rather than using the converter cable that ships with the charge controller. To make sure that your USB to RS-485 cable & the device RS-485 port are working, have you tried using them with a Windows PC and the manufacturer's s/w? Simply using the provided USB converter cable is not working for me right now with the Pi. By using repeaters very large RS-485 networks can be formed.

The maximum number of devices that can be connected to a main cable is 32, including the Master. The main cable must be no longer than 700 m! Longer branches could cause signal reflections and generate disturbances and consequent errors in the reception of data. The branches must be no longer than 1200 m! This distance does not include the branches (which must nevertheless be short). The RS485 system used for Modbus communication provides a main cable (Bus or backbone), to which all the devices have to be connected with branches (also known as stubs) that are as short as possible. Normally, this connection is made at one end of the main cable. They are often terminated with 8 pin RJ45 connectors at either end. It operates on a differential signaling method of measurement rather than voltage measurement wrt GND pin. A simple method is often a status check. The diagram below shows potentials of the A (blue) and B (red) pins of an RS-485 line during transmission of one byte (0xD3, least significant bit first) of data using an asynchronous start-stop method.

Thus in Table 9 6 , RTS1 is connected to CTS1, and DSR1 is connected to DTR1 and DCD1 onboard the QScreen Controller using zero ohm shorting resistors. In order to avoid signal reflections, a 120 Ohm termination resistance must be fitted on each end of the main cable. Using a repeater, the main cable is divided into different segments, each of which can be up to 700 m in length and connect 32 devices (this number includes the repeaters). No I have not been able to test this using the Windows software. Data translation between different machines can be performed with ease, and applications that communicate via the one serial port can be debugged using the other serial channel. For example, Belden 3105A cable can be specified, but different types of cable with equivalent characteristics can be used. Note that this Hackster project does something similar with splicing an ethernet cable to a UART breakout module. The mention of "Ethernet RS-485 communication interface" confused me.
