The results of the MQs, DCTs and z-tests were examined using descriptive statistics and Z tests. The CLKs were discovered to use euphemistic terms such as "sorry" or "thank you". They also referred external factors, like relational advantages. For example, they described how their relationships with professors facilitated an easier performance with respect to the intercultural and linguistic norms of their university.
However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and punishments they could face if they flouted the local social norms. They were concerned that their local friends might consider them "foreigners" and think they are incompetent. This concern was similar in nature to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their usefulness in particular situations and in different cultural contexts. This will help them better understand how different cultural environments may impact the pragmatic behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond. This will also assist educators to improve their methods of teaching and testing Korean pragmatics.
