The best robot hoover can mop and vacuum without needing your attention. It will leave your floors spotless. Its low cost and top-of-the-line functions (such as dirt detector) are a plus.

As with other top iRobot models (including the top choice) they utilize smart mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have the feature of Carpet Boost that increases its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on floors that were bare They are also adept in cleaning dog hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a good deal for those whose home or office has a lot of bare flooring and you're looking to save money. Plus, it's very quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or going to school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with an auto vacuum and mop-emptying dock, however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has a powerful suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This highly efficient mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it will learn the layout of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. The app lets you modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm is great for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to clean an entire home with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a good cleaning job on different floors and rooms with different flooring types including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was superb and it was able to avoid fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the rivals. It's one of our most attractive looking robot mop vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It features advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing some more volume and a little more cost it's a efficient two-in-one device that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on how dirty they are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home using the app or voice controls. If you have lots of furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Additionally, a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot hoover and mop vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to set up an automatic vacuum cleaner spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, which means it can get to corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for pet hair. And you can set up a spot cleaning that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute little eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is more noisy than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has an app that's less intuitive and a small base station that does not double as a bin to empty.
