The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into stronger bases. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an added bonus or impact when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, gathered in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they can be upgraded.

In order to upgrade an item of armor, the user must select it and then click the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen, showing what the expected upgrade stats will be as well as the necessary component or material needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. In the case of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph with a different one the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component, it will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions that can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level, but the required materials aren't as high. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the impact of those items, instead of spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.

This will enable the item upgrader to receive upgraded components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Energy, and it will reset to zero on failure or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
