Converters between RS-485 and RS-232 are available to allow a personal computer to communicate with remote devices. One very common example in the automation world is remote control of VFDs or Variable Frequency Drives. The cable shield must be earthed only in one point. This distance does not include the branches (which must nevertheless be short). Longer branches could cause signal reflections and generate disturbances and consequent errors in the reception of data. The branches must be no longer than 1200 m! All the ‘A’ terminals must be connected together and all the ‘B’ terminals must be connected together respectively. Each device has a communication port with two terminals, which are indicated for the sake of convenience as A and B. In these two terminals the communication cable is connected so that all the devices that take part in the communication are connected in parallel. Circuits may be terminated on screw terminals, D-subminiature connectors, or other types of connectors. Because a mark (logic 1) condition is traditionally represented (e.g. in RS-232) with a negative voltage and space (logic 0) represented with a positive one, A may be considered the non-inverting signal and B as inverting. In order to avoid signal reflections, a 120 Ohm termination resistance must be fitted on each end of the main cable.
The maximum number of devices that can be connected to a main cable is 32, including the Master. Another advantage over RS232 that I mentioned earlier is the number of connectable devices. Using a repeater, the main cable is divided into different segments, each of which can be up to 700 m in length and connect 32 devices (this number includes the repeaters). In order to increase the extent of the Modbus network, repeaters can be used; and signal amplifying and regenerating devices provided with two communication ports that transfer to each what they receive from the other. In some countries, inserting two cables into the same screw terminal is permitted. RS485 avoids this issue which also allows for shielding of the cables to prevent noise. How fast can I collect data via RS485? Without termination resistors, reflections of fast driver edges can cause multiple data edges that can cause data corruption. The diagram below shows potentials of the A (blue) and B (red) pins of an RS-485 line during transmission of one byte (0xD3, least significant bit first) of data using an asynchronous start-stop method. Normally, this connection is made at one end of the main cable. A Modbus RS485 connects a Master device to one or more Slave devices.
In order to avoid errors when many devices are connected, cables of the same colour should be used for all the connections to the terminals A and cables of the same colour should be used for all the connections to the terminals B of the various devices (e.g. white for A and blue for B). Setup is the same when multiple meters are interconnected via cables CBL03, except that all meters now need to be set to a different digital address via their front panel. See page 7 of the Laurel digital panel meter manual, page 7 of the Laurel counter manual, page 8 of the Laurel scale meter manual, or page 8 of the Custom ASCII protocol manual. Then use front panel programming to set the baud rate, protocol, digital address, half or full duplex, and other available parameters. When a single RS485 meter or counter is connected to a PC via a cable CBL06, set the PC to 9600 baud. The recommended arrangement of the wires is as a connected series of point-to-point () nodes, a line or bus, Ideally, the two ends of the cable will have a termination resistor connected across the two wires.
I will know the price of the (TWO) wire RS485. If you are familiar with RS232, then you may already know a little bit about it. This connection may be used to limit the common-mode signal that can be impressed on the receiver inputs. Although many applications use RS-485 signal levels, the speed, format, and protocol of the data transmission are not specified by RS-485. Is there an easy way to log data to a PC from multiple instruments on an RS485 bus? If the PC is connected to the multiple Laureate instruments on an RS485 bus via an Ethernet-to-RS-485 gateway board or a USB-to-RS485 gateway board, use Laurel’s free XLOG2 datalogging software. What made it such an advancement over RS232 was the fact that it could transmit not only a single device to device transmission, but also a communications bus to connect multiple devices at once. Unlike what happens in many energy distribution systems, the manner in which the devices are connected in parallel is important. Typical uses are very large networks, monitor and control of elevators, machinery, lighting, security, fire and alarm, access, cameras, military ground support, and much more.
