How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace audi key fob the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points.
