We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right one. They looked at storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, GE's Profile series is targeted at those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a smart water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Other than that the fridge is a great choice. It comes with a huge freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it can hold a decent amount of frozen foods as compared to similar models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is the standard for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It comes with a decent size freezer in the left side. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments for the perfect storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice touch, and the in-door storage bins come with a third shelf that folds down to allow you to store items that are tall. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls so that you can set them for Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to open and close however I found the plastic's textured coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator has all the features you would expect from a refrigerator within this price range. It has Wi-Fi, app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the globe. It also offers numerous options for customizing. It will also send notifications when the door is left unlocked and when the fridge or freezer requires defrosting, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be great to have GE PYE22PYNFS offered Precise fill which is a feature that is available in a few GE refrigerators that allows users to choose the amount of cups they wish to dispense. It does offer a countdown feature on the fridge's display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and two compressors to preserve food. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is ideal for a single family or kitchenette that needs an elegant design and top of the highest quality food preservation.

This fridge was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test for several reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit and never changing more than a fraction of a degree--this is key to preventing freezer burn. The refrigerator section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature within an hour, and remained at the temperature throughout our tests.

Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app lets you monitor and control your refrigerator remotely on your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive, but it offers excellent features and functionality for the cost.

It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized door bins on each door as well as two rows of shelves for spill-capture and a set more spacious drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded in order to create more space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a excellent option for those looking to combine the benefits of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, which can make it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice if you want a French-door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a basic design that's not as visually striking as other models however it comes with enough features that make it a great pick. Its most significant feature, the adjustable temperature drawer, helps to keep food items like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also has a large ice maker and a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated over the two crisper bins, is another great feature. This drawer lets you redirect the majority of your fridge's cooling power into this area so that you can store foods that require special attention. During my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures were fairly consistent across all areas of the refrigerator. Temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray much from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a great performance, but it doesn't quite be among the top in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat in order to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is made of stainless steel with a grey body which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It does a great job of repelling fingerprints and streaks even when compared with glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
