World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item can be used to improve the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats.
Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a commonly used measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.
Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a good gauge of an item's worth and how much damage it will be able to deal. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when evaluating the inventory of a seller.
The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It is based on the fact that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This can result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is often very close to Blizzard's real item level.
This is not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The level of the area where the item dropped can also alter its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by the player's level.
The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. A white or grey item for instance, can only be upgraded once and items with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs.
Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to give items additional damage, special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs), or to make them unique by adding a name.
All affixes can be being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling.
In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However each item will include at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item upgrader kit that is unique, or a God Roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to enhance. As with base equipment, it will have to be done per item and the item comparison interface will not show all possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is more advantageous in early game runs because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each item upgrader level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck or to increase the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.
The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%..
The success of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of the item. Each item has a base success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5percent.
The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
