The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item level upgrade or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Usually items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an added bonus or effect when the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players will have to select it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen that shows what the expected upgrade stats will be and also the material or component needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three types of universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, are able to be used in any type of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They offer the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used with any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix to the end of item names. For instance, adding a Glyph could transform a staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool and replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The cost for upgrades is increased with each level however, the materials needed aren't as high. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of these items, rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

This will enable the item to receive new upgrade components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Energy, and it resets to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade is successful.

Once a piece is upgraded to its maximum level it is able to gain affixes which will enhance its capabilities. The number of affixes available will depend on the item's class. For example the rare or exclusive weapon with a normal base will only have two affixes for it, while a legendary armor will have up to eight affixes for it.

Each upgrade requires an amount of Flightstones and crests to complete, depending on the current level of the item and the item slot it's in. Weapons typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.

If an item is not able to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give the player the option to transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with another set of upgrades. This process takes up to two hours and costs the same amount of material, though it will result in a lower chance of success.

To measure the height of a structure, engineers will use an instrument to compare the measurement with a known reference point like a benchmark or the elevation of the ground. This process is known as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings using the level and backsight rod, then turning the level and making the foresight rod reading. This method guarantees that structures are built to a high degree of precision and safety.

Rerolling

Rerolling refers to the process of changing an item's upgrade components. It is a very important aspect of the game that can increase an item's damage, strength, or other attributes. This can be done via the item menu or pressing the Reroll button of an upgraded item. Rerolling can be costly and should only be used in rare cases.

The game allows players to recycle upgraded items, and use them to obtain Reroll tokens. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original Best item upgrade or a similar item. Recyclable items come with a level gauge that shows how much of the upgrade gauge has been filled. The rarity and the cost of upgrading an item will determine the level of filling.

In the past, certain upgrade items had priority affixes which made them easier to roll for than other. This meant that you'd get the stats most important to your build more often than other items. This included stats such as the armor's total armour, thorns and control impaired duration reduced stats or the weapons' bonus attack speed and crit strike chance.

This has changed since the most recent patch. Priority affixes were removed and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling for each stat. This can be a good or a negative thing dependent on your needs and requirements from your equipment.

Each upgraded item may also come with a unique fixed-value, fixed-value benefit that increases its power by a certain percentage. These bonuses are added to the normal affixes. The more you improve a product, the greater your chance of obtaining an exclusive bonus.

The game also includes various sets which give a set bonus when three or more upgraded items from the same set are equipped on an item upgrader kit. This is a great way to give the character more power without spending a ton of money.

Many players reroll their weapons and gear particularly in the initial stages. Rerolling is a method to gain a stronger character faster, which allows players to advance in the game and attain higher tiers.

Sets

Clicking the Upgrade button will show the Best item upgrader's attributes and the items required to upgrade it. It will show the item's characteristics, as well as the required items to upgrade it.
