How to Replace an replacement audi key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi keyless go's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

Ford-New.pngThe G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
