1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive cousin the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we have examined. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they employ smart mapping to produce precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost that increases its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also quiet and operates while you're at work or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with an auto-emptying dock, however. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad to a dry one in minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could complete the task of cleaning a whole home and had 66 percent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was top notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds and cables.

It also mops using only one pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map.
