The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, however the materials required do not.
