How to Programming a BMW Key Fob

310762719_174097598533869_2015889089625884380_nlow.jpgIn the ever-changing technology of automobiles, it's important for locksmiths and mechanics to be educated about key programming and duplication. This will enable them to handle complex issues such as BMW key fob programming.

Begin by putting your working key into the ignition, then turn the key to position 1. The dash and accessory lights should come on.

What is EEPROM?

The EEPROM chip is a nonvolatile memory which can be erased or reprogrammed. It can be used to store a variety of things, such as serial numbers and other unique information in virtually every device that is connected to Ethernet. It is the chip used in printers, charge cards, and even blood sugar monitors. It is also used to store data sequences that regulate microcontrollers' operations, as well as to offer a method of recovering from resets caused by power-on conditions.

The fundamental EEPROM chip contains two field effect transistors. One has what is called floating gate, while the other is a control gate. When the device is powered, electrons are released from the gate, and they can be held in a 0 or 1 state dependent on the amount of voltage is applied. The EEPROM can be read by determining the state of these transistors.

If the EEPROM is in the "0" state there is no value. If the EEPROM state is "1" is the case, it has a 1 value. Between these two states, no data is stored, but it is still possible to write. EEPROMs can be erased using a short time of the voltage applied to the gate.

The benefit of EEPROM is that it can be erased and written to without any external circuitry. This makes EEPROMs extremely beneficial for systems that require frequent updates to memory like remote microcontrollers that do not require keys. There are different types of memory chips which offer similar functions, but are better suited to long-term storage.

Modern flash memory chips, for example, are very popular and are found in digital cameras. These are used to store multimedia files for long-term storage and retrieval. But they aren't EEPROMs and their fundamental functions differ from the ones of true EEPROMs. They are still utilized, however, due to their versatility and capacity to store a small amount of data in a tiny space.

What is OBDII?

Up until recently, most automobile manufacturers had their own diagnostic systems to identify car problems. Then in 1996, the government required that all cars have an established system to read diagnostic codes. This new system, known as OBD-II is based on the same port and diagnostic code system across all makes and models of vehicles sold in the US. This means that if you encounter problems with your car it will be easy for any mechanic to determine what is causing the issue by plugging in a specialized tool.

The OBD-II detects various errors within the engine and other components using the standard diagnostic plug. The information is then stored in the car's computer system for later analysis. The system is then able to identify and fix any issues before causing significant damage. The mechanic can connect an OBD-II scan tool to the port that will display error codes and tell them where they came from.

Scan tools have more processing capacity than code readers and detect more types of error codes. They can also display live data graphs and record data to be analyzed later. Some tools are capable performing complex tasks such as reprogramming an ECU or supplying performance-enhancing options. These tools are employed by professional auto technicians and are generally more expensive than scanners that are merely scanning.

When connecting a scan tool to the OBD II port, it will automatically recognize what protocol it is using and then communicate with the vehicle by using the appropriate pins. There are a variety of protocols. The most common include SAE J1850 (KWP2000), used by Ford and some GM automobiles ISO 14230-4, utilized in various European and Asian vehicles and CAN. Certain scan tools will tell you exactly what the code means. Others will give you the code and you'll need to conduct some research on the internet to determine what it means.

What is CAS unit?

The CAS module is a BMW module which controls the antitheft feature of the car. The system works by reading an encoded signal from the fob of the key and confirming it with the CAS module. The CAS module will send an enable signal to the engine control unit if the signal is valid. If the signal is not valid the engine will not begin.

BMW CAS module failures can result in a variety of symptoms like key fob malfunctions, alarm activation, central locking and dashboard warning lights. If you experience any of these symptoms, have the CAS Module checked as soon as possible by an expert.

The CAS system communicates to the vehicle's engine and other systems using the bmw keyfob ICOM VCDS. The VCDS connects to the CAS via a cable that is specially designed with a DIN connector at the end. The VCDS can perform a variety of functions such as showing error codes and altering the timing of the ignition. It also comes with a variety of security features to protect the car from theft.

BMW automobiles come with an CAS key module in addition to the ICOM VCDS. The module is powered by the ignition coil, and is not designed to use batteries. A transponder chip is embedded in the key to send the coded signal to the CAS module. This is transmitted through a loop antenna (coil) at the lock for ignition.

The CAS state logic is implemented in the CasSystem class. You must create one instance of this class for each instrument that needs to receive information from CAS. Multiple instances of this class could result in unintended behavior. CasSystem also manages alert messages in addition to providing state information. It does this by releasing a cas_activate_alert subject that requires event data as an object with key and priority properties. This topic specifies both the ID of the alert you'd like to activate and its priority level. Once you've activated an alert, the CasSystem will broadcast an alert on the cas_alert_displayed and cas_alert_hidden event bus topics (defined by the CasEvents interface). It will also subscribe to the cas_master_warning_active and cas_master_caution_active topics to consume their statuses.

How do you program a BMW key

BMW offers drivers in the Murrieta area keyless entry, a feature that lets you to lock and unlock your vehicle without the need for a physical key. This keyless entry system is only activated when the key fob has been programmed to the car. It's only a couple of easy steps.

The procedure is slightly different depending on whether you're pairing a brand new BMW key fob with an existing BMW or starting from scratch without a working Bmw Keyless Entry key. The first step is to take the working key fob as well as the ones you wish to program inside of your car, ensuring that all windows and doors are shut. Insert the working key into the ignition, and turn it to position one and back rapidly five times (do not start the engine). Take the key out by turning it backwards.

With the key fob still in your pocket, hold the unlock button while you press the lock button (the bmw key fob functions logo) three times quickly. Then release the unlock button, and the door locks should be locked and unlock automatically. Repeat this procedure for each additional key fob you wish to program.

Connecting your smartphone to your car using Bluetooth is the final step. Start the BMW Connected app and log in. The BMW Digital Key setup button will be displayed. This will activate the key on your smartphone and allow you to use it in conjunction with the Digital Wallet app.

Once you have completed these steps, the BMW key fobs can then be used by other members of your Corona family or friends. Our service department is happy to provide more advice and tricks to help you enjoy a successful BMW driving experience.
