Choosing a Large bedside cot mattress Cot

Bedside cots, also referred as co sleeper bedside cot-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their infants at night without the danger of SIDS. However they are not recommended for use up to 6 months when your baby will need to be moved into a cot or moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model comes with a bassinet that can be lifted off to use around the house and a manual rocking function. It was also easy to put together and came with its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They also often convert into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used until three years old. old. There are two sizes of wooden bedside cot cots - large and standard, which can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. Choosing the larger of the two is a good idea when you want your child to sleep in it until they are at least three years old.

Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, liked that it was slightly larger than a Moses basket, but not too big for the baby's room. She claims that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot for evening feedings or to soothe and that it's quality is better than other cots she has seen that are less sturdy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways - it's a lift-off bassinet that can be moved around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib, choose one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It also needs to be able to be dropped down out of the way so that you can pull your baby up towards you for night feeds or to soothe. This is especially useful in the event of recovering from C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level and others prefer a higher height to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option with one of our mum test subjects saying that it comes with a simple collapsible part that you can press down at the touch of a button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside crib or cot sleeper is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance, usually at approximately 6 months. This is because of the risk of suffocation. It is also important to be aware that when your child is old enough to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot, you must take the sides off when they are ready to do so. This will stop them from climbing out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are many different styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. Some of the more expensive options come with features such as a built-in light or a center of calm which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. You can also find models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.

For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to stay in bed for extended periods. Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested this product at home, said it was simple to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after having a C-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than the other cribs that we've looked at, but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, explaining how it was designed with the needs of parents and children in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly simple to operate and is super-sturdy. Its swivelling base is brilliant as it means you can move the bassinet from side-to-side, and one of its sides can be lowered down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from their C-sections,' she added.

Safety

The bedside cot's primary safety characteristic is that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or their nappies. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from the c-section. Look for a design that allows you to lower one side at the press of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby without needing to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. However, the CPSC found that these requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the amount of instances in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers which can be converted to different modes like bassinets and play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multi-use foldable bedside crib sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as the bassinet.

cots-4-tots-logo-colour-300x100-png-original.jpgThe CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be issued in November of 2021.
