The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept in removing hair from dogs. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used when you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for a wet one in minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek automatic vacuum and mop cleaner that can also mop floors. Its smart cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also has a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover robotic hoover for carpets, but it's not as good as other hoovers in terms of deep cleaning.

This highly efficient mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste, and it also learns your home's layout over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It comes with a battery life that is comparable to other models.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums it, something we've not seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competition. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has an exemplary 10/10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an easy mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine, similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive rivals. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the house depending on how dirty the areas are.

If you own a larger home, it is worth choosing a model that has zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice command. A stair mode can be useful if you have a lot furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you might imagine from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a reciprocating movement that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency. The app also gives access to many features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It is great at vacuuming, however it is more likely to be stuck on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums that we have tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
