Replacement Handles For Windows

Window victorian scroll door handles are one of the most frequently used components of your double-glazed windows. Over time they can become rusty or worn down.

You'll need to know the current handle's spindle length as well as its fixings in order to replace it. The best way to do this is by looking at the base of the handle you have previously replaced.

Handle

Over time, uPVC handles and window locks can be damaged by wear and tear, or intentional or accidental damage. This could mean that the aluminium door handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or that it's not even locked in any way. The most common type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. It has a spindle that protrudes from the handle and is inserted into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking mechanism in the window handles for upvc. It is a good idea, when replacing a uPVC handle using screw covers to shield the screws from corrosion and keep them secure. You can also make use of a spacer, washer or another sealant to make an even tighter fit. Having a screw cap on the handle will also keep water and debris from entering the handle and causing damage.

After removing the handle from the window, it's recommended to clean the spindle and the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions properly. It will also prevent dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

The next step is to install the uPVC handle. Be sure to go through the directions that come with your new handle and review the previous one to get a better understanding of how to go about it. It's also worth noting that if replacing the uPVC handle cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you will need to examine the step height of the window to find the right size of handle. These hinges are designed to fully open in an urgent situation and have an easy-cleaning position. We also carry hinges with restricted-egress, which are designed to limit the opening angle of a window to 100mm maximum. This is ideal for families with children.

The sound of a hinge squeaking can be a sign that the hinges are worn out, this is often caused by the rubbing of metal against metal. A small amount of lubricant might help, but should the noise continue to be heard, it is likely that the hinges need to be replaced.

The windows that are plumb help to avoid the need for binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, which ensures that it opens and closes correctly. A window that isn't plumb might have trouble opening and closing, or may become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges, be aware that they are available in imperial or sizes in metric. Make sure the replacement has the same step height as your old one, which can be determined by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch in the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also measure the length of the spindle on the handle you currently have to determine the size of the replacement.

The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles feature a mental spindle on their back that is attached to the frame of the window and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handle have pegs that are fixed in place by three or four screws that are inserted into the frame and sash.

It's easy to replace your window operator once you've identified the correct replacement. Remove any screws that attach to the trim from the casement cover and carefully lift the cover to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the previous one and remove any trim screws that are rusted. Then, screw the new lever to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover back over the mechanism.
