Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

The Register of Exercise Professionals is an UK scheme for fitness instructors and trainers. It recognizes industry-based certifications, offers public liability insurance and requires that participants work within an industry code.

It was disbanded in 2020, and its members moved to CIMSPA. But what does that mean for fitness professionals?

What is CIMSPA?

CIMSPA is a professional association for health and fitness professionals. It is a reputable industry body that regulates trainers. It is also accountable to ensure that it is maintaining and developing standards of excellence for the fitness industry.

CIMSPA generally approves the regulated (Ofqual) qualifications that have been certified by an accredited awarding organisation like Focus Awards or Active IQ and other types of continuing professional development (CPD) training.

Membership of CIMSPA also confers an enviable status within the industry. It enables members to access specialist insurance coverage, which includes public liability coverage of up to PS10 million and personal accident insurance. It also gives the record of their professional development and allows members to take free e-learning courses and offers access to an online career portal that is updated regularly with jobs.

The organization is also part of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals. This means that its members are able to use their registration for work in other countries as long as they hold the appropriate qualifications. The organisation strives to set standards that are consistent across the globe to help the industry grow.

The CIMSPA Academy is a non-profit and works in partnership with other organizations to provide support, education and guidance. In addition to this CIMSPA Academy CIMSPA Academy offers free e-learning courses for its members, including various professional development topics that are relevant to the industry.

Are REPs qualifications recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals was an independent public registry that operated through a membership system. It was established to safeguard the public and give fitness professionals and employers the confidence they required that an individual held qualifications that were recognised and avon rep in my area endorsed and aligned with National Occupational Standards.

REPs was an UK based register and as such only covered the UK fitness industry. It was not a requirement to be registered with REPs, however it gave clients confidence that their fitness professional was fully trained and operating to the highest standards.

In 2020, REPs will be sold to UK Coaching. An agreement with CIMSPA has been reached that will combine the REPs Directory with the CIMSPA directory. Fitness professionals are still able to join both REPs as well as CIMSPA. However, renewing REPs membership will no longer be an option.

While REPs is no longer operating in the UK but they do have an international presence through ICREPs which connects international registers as well as their fitness professionals. This means that if REPs-certified in the UK you are able to work as a personal trainer in other ICREPs countries such as Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Africa and UAE.

However it is vital to note that REPs isn't a guarantee of employment or insurance cover for fitness professionals.
